On Thursday, I received a reminder that the garden bin would be picked up the following week. This motivates Saturday morning in the yard.
My mission: to fill the empty bin.
After so many months of heavy rain, the once flourishing herb and vegetable gardens are almost completely covered in weeds and struggling for light.
As I move about clearing, I discover the garden has been productive while I’ve been hunkered inside.
Firstly, near the now-massive avocado tree that my son and I grew from a seed, there is a brand-new tree standing almost 50cm tall.
The birds love to eat our avocados yet despite all the seeds they leave on the ground, we’ve never ever had one grow.
Near this new addition, I spotted another surprise. This time a Ponga (Silver fern) has sprouted confidently from the seeds of the fallen fronds of its mother tree. Again, a delightful first.
And my spider plants which are relegated house plants are looking happier than ever. Baby plantlets have dropped off and rooted themselves into the soil expanding the area with their vibrant white and green.
As I wheeled my now-filled garden bin to the curb, I couldn’t help but feel delighted and enlightened.
Had I been outside, tidying up months ago, those seeds that had been busily and quietly germinating, might have been swept up my hoe.
Maybe this was a lesson…
Let things (and people … [read] adult children) be and see what will grow and flourish – without me interfering…
